These are the terms for using Tungs. We have tried to write them the way we would say them out loud. Using the app means you accept them.

If it is not right for you, we refund you

Email [email protected] and say so, and we will refund what you paid in full. You do not have to explain, and there is no form. We would rather have the conversation than keep the money.

What Tungs is

Tungs is a Mac app that installs two virtual audio devices, Tungs Microphone and Tungs Speaker. You select them inside a calling app such as Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, FaceTime, WhatsApp, Discord or Webex. You speak in your language and the other person hears yours translated; they answer in theirs and you hear it in yours. The person you are talking to installs nothing.

It requires macOS 14 or later and an internet connection. It is a Mac app only: there is no Windows, iPhone or Android version. The person on the other end can be on any device.

The free trial

The first 10 minutes of translation are free. No account, no card, nothing to cancel. The trial is one per Mac and is meant for trying the product out.

Minutes packs

A pack is $19.99 for 120 minutes of translation. Minutes are counted while a translation session is actually running. Unused minutes from a pack expire one year after you buy it. You can buy another pack from inside the app whenever you want, and packs stack.

The license

A license is $49.99 per year and runs Tungs on your own OpenAI API key. There are no minutes to buy and no minutes to run out of, because the translation is billed to your OpenAI account by OpenAI, at their rates, and we are not in the middle of it. You are responsible for your own OpenAI usage and costs. The license renews yearly until you cancel it, and you can cancel any time.

Your account and your code

When you buy, we email you a 20-character account code. It is what restores your purchase on a new Mac, after a reinstall, or if something goes wrong — enter it under "Restore my purchase". Keep it; treat it like a receipt. If you lose it, the app can email it to you again, and so can we.

Your purchase is for you. Please do not share the code around.

What translation can and cannot be relied on for

Tungs is machine translation, and machine translation is wrong sometimes. It mishears, it guesses at names, it flattens idiom and it can miss a negation that reverses a sentence. It is good enough to have a real conversation with someone whose language you do not speak. It is not good enough to be the only thing standing between you and a serious decision.

Do not rely on it alone for medical, legal, financial or safety-critical conversations, and do not use it for emergency calls. Where accuracy has consequences, use a qualified human interpreter.

Recording and consent

Tungs can record a call, but only when you press record. Whether you may lawfully record a conversation depends on where you and the other people are, and in many places everyone has to agree first. That is your responsibility, not ours. Recordings are written to your own Mac and we never receive them — see the privacy page.

Fair use

Do not use Tungs to break the law, to deceive someone about who they are talking to, to harass anyone, or to intercept conversations you are not part of. Do not resell access, and do not try to pull the service apart — reverse engineering it, hammering it automatically, or working around the minutes.

Availability

We will keep Tungs running and keep improving it, but we do not promise it will never be down. Translation depends on OpenAI's service, and when that is degraded Tungs is degraded with it. If we ever have to stop offering the product, we will tell you and deal fairly with unused minutes.

The legal part

Tungs is provided as it is, without warranties beyond those the law gives you and does not let us exclude. To the extent the law allows, our total liability to you for anything connected with Tungs is limited to what you have paid us in the twelve months before the claim. Nothing here limits liability for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited.

The software stays ours. Buying minutes or a license buys you the right to use it, not ownership of it.

If we change these terms we will update the date at the top. Continuing to use Tungs after a change means accepting it; if you do not, ask us for a refund.
